Journalists rush to blame treacherous terrain, poor weather, or sudden mechanical failure. They talk about winding mountain passes and the cruel geography of island nations. It is a neat, comforting fiction. It absolves local authorities, transport ministries, and operators of any real responsibility.
Nature does not steer buses off ravines. Human decisions do.
When a vehicle carrying teenagers and children plunges into an abyss, the immediate reflex is to point at the cliffside and mutter about bad luck or difficult topography. That is garbage. Mountainous geography is a constant. It does not change from Tuesday to Wednesday. What changes is vehicle maintenance budgets, operator fatigue management, guardrail investment, and regulatory oversight. If a road cannot handle a passenger bus without sending twenty-five people to their deaths, that road should be closed, or the vehicles running it should be subject to rigorous safety caps. Period.

If an administration chooses not to install them because funds were siphoned elsewhere, the resulting crash is not a natural disaster. It is a structural failure of governance.

What Real Reform Looks Like
