The disaster happened around 9:13 in the morning. The Eurocopter EC130 B4 was traveling from the Loisaba wildlife conservancy toward the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County. Operated by Lady Lori Helicopters for guests booked through the luxury tour company &Beyond, the aircraft went down near the rugged foothills of Mount Ololokwe.
High-Profile Victims and International Impact
The tragedy immediately drew global attention due to the prominent figures on board. Ecuador's presidential office and transport ministry confirmed that Michele Sensi-Contugi, director general of the country's National Intelligence Centre, was killed alongside his wife, Stephany Hollihan. Sensi-Contugi was a close associate of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and was visiting Kenya on holiday. His wife held dual US and Ecuadorian citizenship.
Local media reports and corporate statements also confirmed that José Suárez, a 55-year-old president and general manager of several Telemundo television stations in Florida, was among the American victims. NBCUniversal and Telemundo released statements expressing deep heartbreak over his loss.
The U.S. State Department officially verified that five of the dead were American nationals, noting that the local U.S. Embassy is actively coordinating with Kenyan authorities to provide consular assistance to grieving families.
Recovery Challenges in Samburu County
Rescue operations faced immediate hurdles. The crash site near Mount Ololokwe presented severe geographical obstacles. Heavy terrain access issues combined with an active post-crash fire slowed down emergency response teams dispatched from nearby Isiolo and coordinated by the Kenya Red Cross.
Samburu County police commander David Nkoroi confirmed that all six passengers and the pilot perished.
